Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants are considered if the newer antidepressants are ineffective for the patient's needs. Less commonly, doctors may choose to prescribe a noradrenaline and specific serotonergic antidepressant. One example of this type is mianserin.
