Ways In Which Sea Buckthorn Oil Benefits Health

Sea buckthorn oil comes from the sea buckthorn fruit, otherwise known as Hippophae rhamnoides. These fruits, native to areas of Europe and Asia, are shaped like tiny eggs and typically orange. Usage of the fruit in medical terms is said to date back to even before the eighth century. Sea buckthorn oil is rich in various vitamins, minerals, and other healthful substances. While researchers are still looking into its effects on conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, the research available now makes it clear seabuckthorn oil is quite beneficial to health. Get to know some of the major ways in which sea buckthorn oil benefits health now.

Sea buckthorn oil's properties as they relate to blood clots are shown in a 2001 study. The study included twelve healthy male participants who took a five-gram dose of sea buckthorn, with coconut oil, every day for four weeks. Following the wash-out period, sea buckthorn oil was found to lower rates of platelet aggregation induced by adenosine 5-diphosphate as well as maximum platelet aggregation. In a separate study from 2003, researchers isolated active substances in the plant called flavonoids. The substances were found to inhibit platelet aggregation induced by collagen. The study was done with mice monitored at a three hundred mcg/kg dosage of flavonoids.

Supporting research can also be found in a Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine review from 2010. The review details a study in which 0.62 microl/ml PRP of sea buckthorn oil, with leaf extract, was shown to protect against platelet aggregation. This study was done on rabbits with atherosclerosis.
